Ad engagement, <a href=\"https:\/\/datareportal.com\/reports\/digital-2023-deep-dive-changes-in-metas-ad-reach-numbers\">too<\/a>. Google CTRs have fallen massively the last decade with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/in-2020-two-thirds-of-google-searches-ended-without-a-click\/\">rise of zero-click searches<\/a>. The visibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.com\/daily\/posts\/decline-of-tv-advertising-366334\">TV<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/3\/20\/2886806\/the-decline-of-print-visualized-us-ad-sales\">print<\/a> advertisements have died off with those mediums. There are tiny exceptions to these (televised sports, some print magazines, podcast advertising, etc.). But, by and large, every marketing channel that&#8217;s risen in the last quarter century has fallen in efficacy the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent a foolishly long time tracking down (through Google searches with date-parameter limiting, the Wayback Machine, and a variety of old marketing blogs, Reddit posts quoting old resources, etc.) average email open and click-through rates from large providers whose data seemed reasonable, in agreement with others from that era, and non-specialized to a particular industry or region. The data tells a simple story.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/average-email-open-click-rate-2005-2024-1024x584.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/average-email-open-click-rate-2005-2024-1024x584.gif 1024w, https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/average-email-open-click-rate-2005-2024-300x171.gif 300w, https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/average-email-open-click-rate-2005-2024-768x438.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Email, thanks to its independence from monopoly-power and the inevitable <a href=\"https:\/\/doctorow.medium.com\/enshitternet-c1d4252e5c6b\">enshittification<\/a> their incentives demand, is the channel that never dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not investing in an email list, you&#8217;re almost certainly missing out. That TikTok\/Instagram\/Threads\/Twitter\/LinkedIn following you&#8217;re building? Statistically it&#8217;s better to trade 1,000 new followers for a single email subscriber. That&#8217;s how lopsided the value-exchange is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;But young people aren&#8217;t using email! In a few years, once &lt;insert arbitrary generation name here&gt; is a majority of the workforce, email will die!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yawn. Prognosticators have been saying that since 2003. It&#8217;s never come true. As people age, they need email addresses. They realize important things they can&#8217;t ignore come through email. They want discounts at furniture stores for their first apartment and on video games that go on sale, and the IRS notifications and their driver&#8217;s license renewal notice. Young people won&#8217;t kill email. AI won&#8217;t kill email. FAANG won&#8217;t kill email (much as they&#8217;d love to). Email is here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S.
