While some folks rail about the AI-generated comments that dominate their LinkedIn feed, I say, thank you for the engagement boost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do these comments make social media a better place? Not really. But neither do the human-written, \u201cNice post, totally agree,\u201d comments. But if you are one of these commenters and you are reading this post, hello, I hope you&#8217;re having a good day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What changes with AI-generated content is that <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/ai-generated-content-is-the-new-floor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">producing mediocre content at scale has never been easier<\/a>. All those high-volume, high-competition &#8220;What is\u2026&#8221; content that&#8217;s difficult to rank for? It&#8217;s going to get even harder. Your legacy competitors published their average version of that blog post a long time ago. And the hopeful disruptors will be trying to game the search algorithm with their AI-remixed junk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any rate, a content strategy built on a bunch of \u201cWhat is,\u201d posts is going to require a lot of resources to make any kind of meaningful impact on your web traffic, let alone your bottom line (if it even does help your bottom line). You\u2019ll be endlessly treading water just to survive in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seerinteractive.com\/insights\/the-sea-of-sameness-problem-in-content-marketing-seo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sea of sameness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m an optimist. Let the bots write the forgettable content you wouldn\u2019t want to read, much less spend time writing. What generative AI can\u2019t replace is your lived experiences. AI has no knowledge of what it is to be alive and it has no shared experiences with us. Forget the sea of sameness. You don&#8217;t even have to swim against the current. You just need to tap into what makes you you, and lead with your unique perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You<\/em> are your moat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you rise above the fray? I have five ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 Ways to Hone Your Competitive Edge Against Generative AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pay attention to what triggers you. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is, perhaps, my favorite tactic of all. I sometimes call this the \u201cinvisible subtweet.\u201d When you\u2019re skimming the news or scrolling your social media feed, what elicits a strong emotion for you? What did you absolutely love? What made you roll your eyes? Start creating from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be tempted to quote-repost to dunk on a bad take. But in the cesspool of social media, you risk inspiring followers to pile onto the original poster. Instead, consider writing your rebuttal as a standalone piece. Then publish it a few days later as a blog or social post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my most viral Twitter threads came from exactly this. I was sick of the same people getting amplified in the \u201cfollow these people\u201d threads, so <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandanat\/status\/1466436477135437824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I made my own version<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandanat\/status\/1466436477135437824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lex-img-p.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/img\/19131801-2849-4f90-9c08-f9fa51491679-RackMultipart20240417-173-4tyca6.png\" alt=\"Image\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I am sorry for this hook, please forgive me.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(Oh and um\u2026 I think I\u2019m the one who\u2019s responsible for creating that awful \u201cThere are XY million people who do this, but 99% of them are doing it wrong\u201d hook, and I am so, so sorry.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to find inspiration in the social feed. You can find it in any content you or your audience consumes. Listen to one of your favorite podcasts and take note of what you disagreed with or have additional thoughts on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of podcasts, I actually talked about this with Mark Drager on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesloopbrand.com\/how-to-sell-more-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How To Sell More podcast<\/a>. In the first third of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesloopbrand.com\/how-to-sell-more\/from-invisible-to-influential-how-to-create-inspired-content-amanda-natividad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my interview<\/a>, I talked about tapping into your social media triggers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yHDOgqKcGzk?si=WFcCdGz2jkJHw21W\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use your experience. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If it happens to you, it can\u2019t be wrong. I\u2019m not suggesting you take discrete experiences and extrapolate them into universal truths. What I am suggesting is that you let your experiences guide your writing, with the necessary caveats, of course. Some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I drank CBD tea every night for a month \u2014 here\u2019s what happened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I grew my email list by 5,000 subscribers in just 2 months without any paid marketing \u2014 here\u2019s how I did it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I spent the past year running Meta ads for a fitness brand \u2014 here\u2019s everything I learned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In any of these examples, you\u2019re explaining your experience with something. And if folks disagree with you, they can only say, \u201cThat\u2019s not what happened when I did that thing,\u201d which is entirely fair for them to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Document your observations.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of taking from your experience, you can start with what you\u2019ve observed. This could come in the form of original research (think: <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/who-sends-traffic-on-the-web-and-how-much-new-research-from-datos-sparktoro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our web traffic study<\/a> with our data partner Datos), followed with your suspicions, speculations, and predictions (think: <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/where-web-users-spend-time-vs-where-traffic-referrals-originate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rand\u2019s follow-up post<\/a> about where people hang out online and how it\u2019s different from the places that refer traffic). This could come from survey data, customer interviews, reading a bunch of recent articles in your niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the trends you\u2019ve been picking up on? There might be a question that comes up pretty often that you can expound upon in a longer piece of content. Some ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cCan I get a refund?\u201d<\/strong> \u2192 Perhaps your refund policy comes from a philosophical place. You could write about why you always give refunds to people who ask. Maybe this even leads to your explaining the danger of chargebacks to small businesses. Or maybe it\u2019s related to your company trying to decrease its carbon footprint and thus, you allow customers to keep a physical product in lieu of a full refund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHow does this work?\u201d <\/strong>\u2192 You can record a Loom video giving a guided demo of your software. Or you can write a tutorial that properly shows how to clean or maintain a product. One key here might be to lean into specific use cases, or how something works in a specific context. (Bonus: This serves as additional customer support collateral!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWill this product be available in X region?\u201d<\/strong> \u2192 Maybe there\u2019s a wonky reason why your product won\u2019t work in another language or in another region. Maybe you have reason to think there isn\u2019t product-market fit in a specific country. Or maybe, there\u2019s a country where the technology you\u2019re building is so far advanced, that you\u2019d be a small fish in a big pond. Any of these could lend themselves well to a unique point of view that can only come from you (or your company).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look in your inbox. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When all else fails, go to your inbox and look at your recent conversations. What are your friends asking you? When was the last time you gave a mentee some guidance? What was the last message you sent that you felt pretty proud of? There\u2019s bound to be a blog post in your emails. Sure! (I actually drafted this blog post in an AI writing tool called <a href=\"http:\/\/Lex.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lex.page<\/a> because it helps me check my writing for brevity, cliches, and readability.) Can AI create all your content? Maybe\u2026 but if ChatGPT can write something as good as you, then so can any other entry-level enthusiast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dare to dig deeper and embrace your unique perspective.
