Office Hours: Can You Actually Track AI Visibility?

“Can you even track AI visibility?”

That was the question behind this SparkToro Office Hours session — on March 11, 2026.

Because if you’ve used ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Google AI Mode for more than five minutes, you already know the problem: ask the same question twice, and you probably won’t get the same answer twice. Different brands. Different order. Different framing. Sometimes a totally different list.

So when marketers started asking whether they should track “AI rankings,” Rand got skeptical. Very skeptical. Possibly “this whole thing might be bullshit” skeptical.

Naturally, we decided to test it.

In this episode, Rand walks through SparkToro’s research with Gumshoe.ai on AI answer consistency, brand visibility, prompt variation, and whether any of this can actually be measured in a useful way.

The answer is more nuanced than “AI tracking is fake” or “AI tracking is the future.” Rankings? Probably nonsense. Visibility over many prompts and many runs? Surprisingly useful. So when your boss, client, or CMO asks why the brand “doesn’t show up in AI,” we kindly suggest you show them this research and the video below:

What You’ll Learn

  • Why AI “rankings” are usually the wrong thing to measure
  • How often AI tools return different brand recommendations for the exact same prompt
  • Why asking ChatGPT once and screenshotting the answer tells you almost nothing
  • What SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai found after running hundreds of prompts across major AI tools
  • Why real people almost never phrase AI prompts the same way — even when they have the same goal
  • How “visibility percentage” may be more useful than rank position
  • Why AI tracking gets harder in broad, crowded categories
  • What marketers should do instead of obsessing over one-off AI answers
  • How PR, brand mentions, and consistent language may influence AI visibility over time
  • Where AI visibility tracking might actually be useful — and where it’s mostly executive anxiety in dashboard form
